Google, Yahoo and Generated Web Pages
In the past 2 months I have had several sites get de-listedfrom Yahoo that relied pretty heavily on DG and TE.My first reaction was to get every directory off all my otherincome producing sites. The problem was that those directorieswere responsible for much of my AdSense income. Now Google and Yahoo did not de-list my other sites thatcontained generated dire...

...ctories. But why?Now at this point I didn’t know if big “G” and big “Y” justdidn’t find them yet, or if the criteria for delisting of a sitewas based on an algorithm of relevancy to consumer value of thegenerated pages, and not just because the pages left a virtualfootprint.Since the de-listing of my generated sites had already cost mebetween $60 and $100 per day in income, not to mention theabsolute frustration I felt with this whole Internet businessthing, I decided to let ...
...the sites that were still listed andmaking money keep the generated directories and see whathappened. This way at lest I would know if all DG, TE, type pages areconsidered “Evil” by the search engine gods. The conclusion to date: It appears that both Google and Yahoowill tolerate generated directory pages, as long as thegenerated pages are determined not to be the sole purpose of thesite. In other words they must represent a sum of the whole value ofthe web site. My unaffected sites consist of 5 to 20 pages of originalcontent, a CD article directory, two blogs (one on-site and oneoff-site) and the dreaded DG directory of resource links. The generated portion of the site was not dominant, (a fewhundred pages and not several thousand) and was a logical partof the whole site concept. These sites also took more time and effort to build and that waswhy I built less of them. This whole saga turned out to be aTortoise and the Hare type story, and just like that story, thisone also has a moral. … I did learn a painful yet valuable lesson. If you expect to get value from your web sites, you must makesure that they first “GIVE” value to your visitors. So in my limited 60 or so day study it appears that the use ofdirectory-generated pages is acceptable. It is the ‘Abuse” ofdirectory-generated pages, that will get you in trouble. This quote could have been made about SEO…“Success isn't permanent, and failure isn't fatal”. Mike Ditka(1939 - )
