Inadequate Trainers and Time Management Training Programs

In today’s world, it seems that almost any topic is open for debate. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed.

Time management training encompasses a very wide spectrum of training areas. Depending on preferences it can be tapered to address particular time management disciplines. Time management training must focus on practical issues and actual experiences particular to the trainees because theories and advises made will not be easily implemented if it deviates from that.

While time management training is popular anywhere in the world and trainees sincerely wants to adopt its principles, many training programs can fail when advises talks of generalities and less on the actual realities of the worker. Another common approach that can fail is to ask the trainees what they expect to address and resolve at the start of the time management training program and resolve this at the end with approaches that are still generic.

Time management programs are now popularly available. The demand for this course has increased overtime. More or less, people have ideas on what the program talks about and many have in one way or the other practiced it in differing degrees of success. Bars have already been raised. It is therefore no longer practical to choose a time management training outfit based alone on the impressive agendas that they provide and the number of training that they have conducted.

It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of Time Management. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

Worse, it is no longer effective to send the company’s training manager to one of these programs and cascade what he learned to the employees. Doing that is like handing out documents that have been carbon copied several times over. The conviction will be lacking, the integrity is nil and the message lost.

It is critical then that trainers and speakers are chosen based not only on their agenda but also on their ability to discuss with emphatic understanding to particular working conditions. Failing that will often result to having a speaker who will coach the trainees on many ideas that the workers have heard already and end on advice that will be hard and unrealistic to apply.

When choosing a trainer that will conduct the time management training program, it will be very helpful if they have had experiences in working the trenches because trainees can identify these and can have a better relationship with the trainer. If not, the trainers’ integrity is questionable to the average worker and may result to ineffective time management training programs.

It is also imperative that the trainer conducts follow though and one on one coaching based on what has been resolved during the program and be able to monitor accurately the trainees’ progress. Your success can often depend on that.

It never hurts to be well-informed with the latest on Time Management. Compare what you’ve learned here to future articles so that you can stay alert to changes in the area of Time Management.

Time Management for College Students

Have you ever wondered if what you know about Time Management is accurate? Consider the following paragraphs and compare what you know to the latest info on Time Management.

Of all the programs that the average college student will likely overcome least is time management. Given the numerous tasks and concerns of the college student ranging from issues on allowances, deadlines, projects, term papers, peers, personal problems, family concerns, jobs, etc. the college student have so much going in their hands. And yet if the college student is to be a professional some day, this is also one of the best advises that they have to take. The following is a simple illustration on how time blocks should be assigned to ensure that time divisions are set for the achievement of basic goals.

The Two Main Hour allocation

Fixed/Given Time = 113 hours every week.
Keeping a good balance between the activities involves determining of what should really be accomplished first and so on. The primary goal is to attend lessons and pass the course. Typical advice but boring. Still that is the objective. Most time spent will have to revolve around that to ensure that the goal is reached.

This is primarily the reason why time management for the college student is paramount. The following are hours that are fixed requirements. You can add or take away a few minutes from it but beyond that may no longer be realistic.

Consider this weekly time allowance:

- Everybody have 168 hours in one week.

Those of you not familiar with the latest on Time Management now have at least a basic understanding. But there’s more to come.

- Sleep = 7 hours for the average adult. Given one hour plus or minus, sleep eats that much time. 7 hours x 7 days = 49 hours

- Lecture and lab time per week = 25 hours

- Personal necessities (eating, grooming, hygiene, etc) = 2 hours a day x 7 = 14 hours

- Study time at one hour per subject (average) = 25 hours

- Other students will need short naps between classes. Some students do not need in between naps. This is why it is not included in the time allocation. If you however need it, block another 30 minutes per day or according to your requirement.

The Free Time
If you have followed the computation, you are left with 55 hours for the week that you can use. If you allocate 4 hours each day for socializing and doing other personal things like jobs, attending extra curricular activities, writing letters, checking on e-mail etc you will still have 28 hours for the week that could be spent further on study periods or your personal time. That still leaves you with almost four hours a day.

More than enough time to enjoy things that you like to do most. Enough time also to personalize your schedule as you see fit. Once done, the key is sticking to it.

Employee Time Management at Your Workplace

Within the last ten years, the average working time of employees have increased by two hours a day where 75% of the workers are working beyond 40 hours a week. At the same time, employees today have to process 6 times more information than what they use to do 20 years ago.

On the other hand, managers lose 11 hours a week on meetings, 3 hours a week looking for things on their tables and 3 hours each day for interruptions.

81% of managers also suffers from stress at least once a week.

If the time that is being used by managers, as parameters to measure others are the same time that they measure on themselves, then employee time management indeed, must be reviewed if not yet implemented.

As reviewing them may need time, I would just offer a few things to spot and remedy them immediately.

There are generally two issues that effect us most in the workplace. One is the way things and events affect us, the other is how we control them.

I trust that what you’ve read so far has been informative. The following section should go a long way toward clearing up any uncertainty that may remain.

- There is no such thing as organized clutter. Clutter is clutter and no matter how it is viewed, it is still disorganized. Employees who want to impress their bosses do this time and time again. There is no sense to it. Everything should be in their proper places, labeled, tagged and stocked except for that which is immediately being worked on.
Finding things when you need them can already substantially increase productivity.

- Job descriptions should be used properly. Working outside of the job description with the workload already required is inviting a disorganization to happen.

- Key result areas are to be well defined and worked on, if possible relentlessly. Poorly defined key result areas means poor progress checking and not achieving desired measures of success.

- Written objectives and activities defining the right tasks at the right time must be reinforced. It may be worth the while to observe realistic cycle plans and cyclic time frames.

- Identify time wasters to use time more effectively.

- There are routine problems and there are the unexpected problems. A good part of meetings are fire-fighting issues that could also be avoided.

It will also be very useful if one looks at the way time is being spent and make the necessary adjustment from there. Because the time that is allotted for work each week is very limited. If these are not planned with care, stressful conditions results that are also big contributors to poor productivity.

The Benefits of Time Management

Aside from the fulfillment that one derives out of being more efficient and productive the effective practice of time management allows the following benefits:

A sense of achievement
In the workplace, man’s worth to the company is measured against the amount of output that is contributed and the influence that it creates. Knowing that one is competitive raises creativity and a sense of well being.

Increase satisfaction
People who have effective management skills are recognized for the good contributors that they are and are richly rewarded because management is always on the lookout for people who have proven discipline paths that can be replicated.

Reduces stress
Often it is not the amount of work done but the amount of work that is yet to be done that causes stress. This is complicated by the frenzy of activity that one goes through without showing much for results.

Reduces anxiety
Anxiety is more often the result of not being sure where one is going. It is performing many different tasks without a sense of getting anywhere. In these instances, pressure mounts and the anxiety is heightened.

The information about Time Management presented here will do one of two things: either it will reinforce what you know about Time Management or it will teach you something new. Both are good outcomes.

Knowing that a task is undertaken and well done results to approval. Effective people are confident knowing their worth and being recognized for it.

Energy levels are increased
Well-organized and effective people avoid clutter resulting to clearer thinking. They know that there are no unfinished businesses, no job hanging, nothing is half done and tasks that are half-right. As schedules and deadlines are met, energy level increases.

The Me time.
One of the best benefits of gaining time management skill is that it allows the person to gain quality time for his leisure. Gaining time for the self to indulge on things that one enjoys most is to be sought. Being tied down so much to work because there is no other option results to so many negative repercussions, one of which is the inability to really do the things that one would enjoy most.

The routine of waking up each morning knowing that one would go back to the same work and workplace. Stressing the self out with the tasks at hand. Going back home again knowing that tomorrow will more or less just be the same as the day before, results to frustration and not being able to enjoy life as it ought to be.

The benefits of time management and the opportunity it provides does not only empower the person that practices it, it also creates an influence that benefits other people as well.

Before you go and start making a list of things you need to do, you have to realize that the list will never work if you won?t back it up with discipline. When talking about discipline here, it means you have to know your own priorities as well to guide you in abiding with the rules that you have set for yourself.

1. List a set of things to do for the day ? This is the traditional way to proper time management. Make a list of things you have to do for the day to keep you informed on what to do for the day. The list will help you to avoid distractions if any should arise during the day.

It is recommended to create a flexible ?to do list?; having a flexible list allows you to fit unexpected events and occasions (only important ones) without destroying the whole list.

2. Change Bad Time Management Habits ? It usually helps for starters to change their Bad Time Management Habits. If you reflect on your everyday activities, you’d probably realize that you spend a lot of time watching too much TV or other forms of leisure. It is okay to spend time on leisure, but never when it exceeds the alloted time for it. Changing these habits would increase your time to do more meaningful activities.

You may not consider everything you just read to be crucial information about Time Management. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself recalling and using this very information in the next few days.

3. Set some things to do for the day as top priority. ? The idea of setting hierarchies among your list of priorities is that those on top of the list are what you need to attend to first. It also helps you to finish on time when you use it in conjunction with your ?to-do? list and daily timetable.

4. Learn how to say ?NO? ? When offered to do something, most people have trouble refusing. Hence, they are confronted with more tasks than they can manage. This is more important when it comes to tasks that are less important, such as watching a movie or going to a football game. You have to remember that once you have completed your pending tasks, you will have time to enjoy yourself.

If you?re planning to go out, you have to plan this a few days ahead. Therefore, you can finish your task ahead as well to save enough time for these long breaks.

5. Dividing your workload ? This is specially helpful when working with other people as a team. You don?t have to do everything yourself. When you divide your workload, people tend to finish faster because they can focus on doing a specific task.

6. Keeping your workplace clean and organized ? When your workplace is a mess, it is usually hard to look for things underneath the pile. Sometimes it takes hours for you to look for a lost paper on a cluttered pile. Therefore keeping things organized improves your over-all efficiency.

7. Setting Goals for yourself ? Having practical and achievable goals for yourself is an important step in proper time management. Setting goals keeps you motivated to do your job well. Remember that you need efficiency to get things done the right way.

They help treat, recover sick people with their acute or severe illnesses, maintain their patient’s good health, and treat life-threatening illnesses and emergencies within a very wide range of health care practices. This is just among the many responsibilities of nurses, along with other health care professionals.

Indeed, a nurse’s task is not only difficult but also complicated. Nurses are their to provide the doctor a lending hand when it comes to treating sick patients. Not only that, they also have to continually acquire new and innovative ways to provide the best form of treatment needed according to a patient’s case. Some of these cases include caring for infants, promoting means to assist the growth of toddlers, or ways of preventing certain diseases. They work is critical because it is their patients’ lives on the line, and so there’s no room for error.

Nurses need lo learn a lot of various skills that are important for practicing their profession. With all these strenuous activities that nurses undertake everyday, they would sometimes be unable to attend to other tasks at hand.

A nurse needs to prioritize all their activities in order to provide more room for his or her other important daily activities. One way to be able to succeed in doing that is through effective time management skills.

Some suggested time management techniques that nurses should use include the following:

1.) Organize Your Activities For The Day

Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:

First of all when you are a nurse, you should note down the most important things that you should be doing for the day, and even in the days to come. You have to emphasize your top priorities, in case you need some things done first before the others. This will help organize your tasks so you can easily attend to them and finish necessary tasks on time. And with good management of time, you still have enough time left to do other useful activities.

2.) Focus And Prioritize

Prioritize on the most important tasks that are to be done and focus on them. Don?t let yourself be distracted by things that would delay you and prevent you from finishing your tasks on time. Avoid interruptions such as taking long chats with fellow nurses or patients so as not to delay the completion of your tasks. You can attend to less important activities after you are done with your shift or during free time.

3.) Avoid Less Important Activities

Avoid activities that would make you spend a lot of time. Among these things are watching television, taking long chats, sending e-mails on the internet, or taking too long conversations on the telephone. You may not realize it but a majority of your time is spent on less important things that you can probably do a day without. Although you can allot a few time for these, you should not spend substantial or valuable time on them.

Beyond better performance at your job, better time management helps lessen the stress in the life of nurses. This would then help them to better communicate with the people they are working with. And better communication at work increases your effectivity and productivity at work.

As your knowledge about Time Management continues to grow, you will begin to see how Time Management fits into the overall scheme of things. Knowing how something relates to the rest of the world is important too.
